I froze when I heard his ringtone \u2014 the one I\u2019d assigned just for him. That familiar melody sliced through the silence like a knife. My hands trembled as I pulled the phone from my purse. The caller ID read: “My Love \u2764\ufe0f”<\/strong> \u2014 the contact name I<\/em> had given him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heart racing, I answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHello?\u201d I said, voice barely a whisper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a moment, all I could hear was static. Then, a low voice \u2014 familiar, impossibly so \u2014 spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy are you coming here?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I couldn\u2019t breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho is this?\u201d I asked, though I already knew. I knew<\/em> that voice. I’d listened to it whisper secrets in the dark, laugh in the kitchen, cry in the hospital room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But deep down, a part of me already understood: something was very wrong<\/em> \u2014 and I wasn\u2019t just chasing ghosts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I made it to the hotel fifteen minutes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lobby was quiet. I asked the front desk about the charge, pretending I was his assistant. The clerk hesitated, but eventually gave in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
