I ran outside barefoot, heart pounding, expecting broken glass or a hurt child. Instead, I saw Mr. Streeter standing beside his car, shouting in disbelief. His front tire was completely flat, hissing softly as air leaked out. Just beyond it, lying in the snow like fallen soldiers, were the remains of Nick\u2019s latest snowman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nick stood a few steps behind me, hands stuffed in his pockets, calm as could be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNick,\u201d I said slowly, trying to keep my voice steady. \u201cWhat\u2026 did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He looked up at me, eyes bright but serious. \u201cI made sure he wouldn\u2019t drive over it again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Streeter spun toward us. \u201cDo you have any idea what this is going to cost me?\u201d he barked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before I could answer, Nick spoke. \u201cI put rocks inside the bottom snowball,\u201d he said plainly. \u201cNot sharp ones. Just heavy ones. Dad used to say cars aren\u2019t supposed to drive on lawns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The street went quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Streeter stared at my eight-year-old son, then at the flattened tire, then back at the churned-up edge of our lawn he\u2019d been cutting across all winter. His face went from anger to confusion to something closer to embarrassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I knelt down immediately. \u201cNick, sweetheart, we don\u2019t solve problems by damaging property,\u201d I said, even though my voice shook. \u201cThat wasn\u2019t okay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He nodded again. \u201cI know. But talking didn\u2019t work. And he kept doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Streeter opened his mouth to argue, then closed it. He looked down at the tire one more time and exhaled hard. \u201cI shouldn\u2019t have been driving over your lawn,\u201d he said finally. \u201cI didn\u2019t think it mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nick tilted his head. \u201cIt mattered to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That did it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Streeter rubbed the back of his neck. \u201cI\u2019ll pay for the tire myself,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cAnd I won\u2019t cut across your yard again. I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He kept that promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From that day on, he parked carefully, well within his driveway lines. A week later, he even showed up at our door with a small box. Inside were two orange cones and a roll of reflective tape. \u201cFor the snowmen,\u201d he said awkwardly. \u201cSo I see them at night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nick\u2019s snowmen lasted the rest of the winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
