What the “E” on a Car Gear Stick Really Means

Many drivers have spent years using manual transmissions without ever questioning the meaning of the letters printed on the gear stick. While most people immediately recognize the numbered gears and reverse position, the mysterious “E” found on some older vehicles has continued to puzzle drivers around the world. Its purpose is far more practical than many realize.

The “E” stands for Economy. It is an extra gear ratio designed to help reduce engine speed while cruising, particularly at higher road speeds. By allowing the engine to operate at lower revolutions per minute (RPM), the Economy gear can improve fuel efficiency, reduce engine wear, and create a quieter driving experience on long journeys.

This feature was commonly found on certain trucks, commercial vehicles, and older European cars where manufacturers wanted to give drivers greater control over fuel consumption. Rather than serving as an additional performance gear, the Economy position was intended for steady driving conditions after the vehicle had already reached cruising speed.

Drivers typically would not use the Economy gear when accelerating from a stop or climbing steep hills. Instead, it became most effective on open roads where maintaining a constant speed was possible. Using it at the right time could help the vehicle consume less fuel while placing less strain on the engine over extended distances.

Although many modern vehicles now achieve similar results through advanced transmissions and electronic controls, the “E” remains an interesting reminder of earlier engineering solutions focused on efficiency. For those who have wondered about the mysterious letter for years, it simply represents an Economy gear designed to make long-distance driving more fuel-efficient.
