I Got Pulled Over Because I Didn’t Yield to a Vehicle With Green Lights

I was driving home when a vehicle with flashing green lights appeared behind me. I had never seen green emergency lights before, so I assumed it wasn’t important and continued driving at the same speed. A few minutes later, a police officer pulled me over and explained that I should have slowed down and allowed the vehicle to pass. I was completely confused because it wasn’t a police car or an ambulance.

The officer could tell I genuinely didn’t understand. He explained that in some areas, green flashing lights are used by volunteer firefighters or emergency responders who are rushing to a station or responding to an emergency. Although the rules vary by location, drivers are often expected to yield or make way for them when it is safe to do so.

According to the fictional story, I had recently moved to a different state and had never encountered this type of emergency vehicle before. Since green lights weren’t used where I previously lived, I had no reason to recognize what they meant. What seemed obvious to local drivers was completely unfamiliar to me.

After the traffic stop, I looked up the local regulations and learned that different states and regions use different colored emergency lights for various services. While red and blue are the most widely recognized, green lights can also indicate authorized emergency responders depending on local laws. It was a lesson I wished I had learned before getting stopped.

Although I wasn’t trying to ignore an emergency vehicle, the experience taught me that traffic laws can differ from one place to another. From that day forward, I made it a habit to learn the meaning of unfamiliar emergency lights whenever traveling, knowing that a little knowledge could help keep everyone on the road safer.
