The Day I Finally Had Enough of a Rude Customer

I used to wait tables at a busy diner, and over time I learned to handle all kinds of customers — the good, the bad, and the ones who seemed determined to ruin your day. But one woman still stands out in my memory.

She came in already fuming. She snapped her fingers to get my attention, sent her food back twice for no real reason, rolled her eyes when I checked in, and then — of course — left no tip. Instead, she scrawled on the receipt: “Try smiling more.”

At first, I bit my tongue. But after a long shift of dealing with her unnecessary attitude, something inside me snapped too. So I flipped the receipt over, grabbed a pen, and wrote back:
“Try tipping more.”

I left it right there on the table.

When she saw it, her face went red. She didn’t say a word, just grabbed her purse and stormed out. But for once, I felt like I had stood up for myself in a job where you’re expected to silently take whatever comes your way.

Sometimes, the best smile is the one you get from finally speaking the truth.
