If You Ever Find a Ribbon or String on Your Car Door Handle — Here’s What It Could Mean

At first glance, a small ribbon or piece of string tied around your car door handle might seem harmless — maybe even a prank or an accident. But experts warn that it could be a sign of something more concerning, especially if it happens more than once.

In recent months, police and safety groups have received multiple reports from people — particularly women — finding strings, ribbons, or zip ties tied to their car handles after shopping or leaving public areas. The unsettling part? These markings are often used as signals.

According to safety experts, such markings can be a discreet method for criminals or traffickers to tag vehicles that appear to have a lone driver — often a woman — so they can later follow or target them. The marker lets an accomplice know which vehicle to watch, sometimes while the driver is still inside a store or distracted while loading groceries.

If you notice this:

  • Do NOT remove it immediately — especially if you’re in a parking lot.
  • Get inside your car, lock the doors, and drive to a safe, populated area.
  • Once safe, contact local authorities and report the incident, including location and any suspicious individuals nearby.
  • Check for other signs, like sticky notes on your windshield or items placed under your wipers, which can also be distraction tactics.

While not every case means danger, it’s always better to be cautious. Police stress that awareness is the best defense — never ignore something that feels off.

Your safety is worth more than curiosity. If you see something unusual on your car, trust your instincts and act fast.
