John Wayne Casserole 🥩🧀

This old-fashioned casserole is comfort food at its finest — warm, cheesy, and full of rich flavor. It’s a Southern favorite that combines seasoned beef, creamy layers, and a biscuit crust that turns golden and perfect in the oven.

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 packet taco seasoning mix
  • ¾ cup water
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cups biscuit mix (like Bisquick)
  • 1 cup water (for biscuit dough)
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 1–1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 1 can diced green chilies, drained
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef and drain the fat. Add taco seasoning and water, stir, and cook for 5 minutes.
  3. In a bowl, mix biscuit mix and water until soft dough forms. Press into the bottom of the baking dish, about ½ inch up the sides.
  4. Layer the beef mixture evenly over the crust. Add tomatoes, bell peppers, and green chilies.
  5. In another bowl, mix sour cream, mayonnaise, half of the cheese, and spread it over the top.
  6. Sprinkle remaining cheese over the casserole.
  7. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until golden and bubbly.
  8. Let it rest for 5 minutes before cutting and serving.

Serve it warm and enjoy that perfect mix of creamy, cheesy layers with a soft, savory biscuit base. One bite, and you’ll understand why people say don’t lose this recipe!
