When a 71-year-old retiree from a quiet rural village started chatting online with a girl who said she was “looking for a kind older gentleman to talk to,” nobody in his family suspected anything strange. He lay injured in the thick jungle brush, alone, terrified, and believing he might not survive the night.

The police warn that these scams are increasing, and predators often target older individuals who live alone.
