The Strange Bathroom Trick With a Shocking Purpose

It started as a weird moment.

A mother visiting her daughter’s house walked past the bathroom and saw something bizarre:

Her son-in-law was stretching a balloon over the shower drain.

Not only that—there were extra balloons neatly stored on a shelf, like he was stocking up for… something.

Confused, she asked what he was doing. Her daughter shut it down immediately:

“It’s none of your business. Just leave it.”

That only made the mystery bigger.

Why would anyone put a balloon over a shower drain?

Here’s the surprising answer:

He was blocking sewer gas.

In some homes—especially older ones or bathrooms that aren’t used often—the drain trap can dry out. When that happens, foul-smelling sewer gases can rise back up through the pipes and into the bathroom.

A balloon stretched over the drain creates an airtight seal that:

  • Stops odors from coming up
  • Prevents insects from crawling through pipes
  • Keeps moisture and humidity down
  • Protects against mold and mildew

In other words, it’s a cheap, quick DIY hack to keep the bathroom fresh—especially if the shower isn’t used every day.

When the family DOES want to use the shower, they simply remove the balloon, run the water, and the trap refills. Then, when they’re done, the balloon goes back on to seal the drain again.

It’s not for decoration.
It’s not suspicious.
It’s actually smart.

The mother assumed something strange was going on—but the truth was simple:

He was trying to keep their home clean and odor-free.

Sometimes the weirdest little tricks turn out to be the most useful ones.
